The Manuscript of My Life

Holy Jazz Batman!!!

Wow! Dave Brubeck is THE MAN! I waited 50 years to see him in concert and I can tell you it was worth every minute of waiting! Totally amazing and the man is 87 years old. The poor guy could barely walk onto the stage and when he talked he sounded like he was speaking his last words. However, when he sat down at the piano, he was 20 years old again. The music flowed from his body and you could just see he was having the time of his life. He was smiling and happy and just glad to be there. The entire quartet was fabulous! The sax player was no Paul Desmond, BUT, he could beat down the ass of Bleedin Gums Murphy any day! (Simpson's humor people!). One of the slower songs they played, which he had written in 1944 when he was serving with General Patton had the tears sliding down my cheeks it was so absolutely beautiful. I could feel it coursing through every cell in my body. Unbelievable!

The trio that opened for him was the Laila Biali Trio. She is from North Vancouver and let me tell you a force to be reckoned with! A real, true performer with a totally amazing style. Her renditions of "Nature Boy" and "Woodstock" were unique and beautiful. I will definitely be on the lookout for her trio again. I'm sure I will be able to catch them on CBC Radio.

Before the concert, Anne and I headed downtown for drinks and appies. We hit the Granville House so we could watch all the action on Granville Street. The martinis were excellent and the bruschetta to die for!

All in all a perfectly wonderful day!

For the next two weeks the Jazz Festival will be carrying on throughout the city and I am going to hit up any and all free concerts I can find - work be damned! There is just way too much good music going on to pass it up.

Lucky you!

I would have liked to have seen him,

To be honest, I wasn't even aware he was still alive. I think his most frequent sideman, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, and Paul Desmond have all passed away now.

I had the pleasure of seeing him at Yankee Stadium in 1972, when I was 14, and I got to meet him and Gerry Mulligan afterward. I still remember that night and can almost hear the music they played. "Take Five" was one of the songs, as I remember.

Stan Kenton came to my high school when I was a senior to work with our jazz band and I had the pleasure of working with him. The song we worked on was Malaguena.
